All You Need To Know About The History Of Father’s Day

  • Father's Day

International Father’s Day 2021 is coming around the corner, and we would like to enlighten you about the importance of this very special day with some interesting facts about the history of fathers’ day. Father’s Day has been celebrated traditionally since the early 20th century. Father’s Day is also observed in many European countries on March 19 as Saint Joseph’s Day. Father’s Day’s history dates back to 1908 when a church in West Virginia held a sermon to honour 362 men killed the previous year in a coal mining explosion. This was the country’s first-ever event to only honour fathers, but it was just a one-time thing, at least in that community. Thus, while a time to honour and celebrate fathers, Father’s Day was inspired by tragedy.

In reality, Father’s Day would not have gained the popularity it has today without one woman’s efforts, Sonora Smart Dodd. One of the reasons Dodd was so passionate about the holiday was that she and her siblings were raised by a single father named William Jackson Smart. Dodd was inspired to establish a holiday for fathers after hearing a sermon at her church about Anna Jarvis’s effort to establish Mother’s Day. After the sermon was over, Dodd approached her pastor and said she believed fathers deserved their day of celebration too. Her original idea was that the holiday would be held on June 5, her father’s birthday.

How Did Father’s Day Come To Be Celebrated On The Third Sunday Of June?

Additional time was required to prepare sermons for a holiday, and so Dodd proposed that the Father’s Day event be held on June 19, 1910, the third Sunday of the month. She continued organizing these celebrations in Spokane, Washington, for many years until she left to study art in Chicago and then resumed celebrations when she returned to Spokane in the 1930s. Motivated by Dodd’s efforts, several politicians attempted to formalize the holiday but with little success. U.S. President Lyndon B. Johnson announced the celebration of Father’s Day with a presidential proclamation, and Father’s Day was made a national holiday in 1972 by President Richard M. Nixon.

Why Should We Celebrate Father’s Day in India Today?

  • Fathers often serve as role models to their children. In most countries around the world, fathers act as the guardian and the advocate of the family.
  • Fathers give great advice and provide a comforting shoulder to lean on in times of trouble. In the early stages of their lives, we as children depend on our fathers for emotional support.
  • In many families still, fathers are the sole bread earners. They are considered the family’s financial backbone, though this has changed somewhat in the modern world.
  • Fathers are the do-it-yourself experts in many of the households. Tasks such as changing bulbs or fixing the fence and other necessary jobs are carried out effortlessly by fathers. They pass on this useful knowledge to their children.
  • For many people, fathers are the most inspirational figures in their lives, and many young adults strive to be like their father. Fathers encourage children to seek to be better.

This remarkable contribution of dads to our society cannot and should not be ignored. Hence, it gives us a lot of pride to celebrate the man who has been our hero since childhood.
